Historical Overview
From the Vagad region to modern Rajasthan
डूंगरपुर has long formed part of the wider Vagad cultural region of southern Rajasthan. Historical traditions associate the establishment of the princely state of डूंगरपुर with Rawal Veer Singh in the thirteenth century, while the town of डूंगरपुर developed as a political and cultural centre under later rulers.
Over time, local rule produced a distinctive architectural legacy, including palaces, temples, water structures and fortified residences. The region’s history also reflects interaction between ruling houses and tribal communities whose traditions, languages and social institutions continue to shape डूंगरपुर.
After Indian independence, the former princely state became part राजस्थान. Present-day डूंगरपुर district carries forward this layered heritage while addressing contemporary priorities in education, health, livelihoods and sustainable development.
